James R. Howland “Jimbo,” a beloved father, grandfather, friend, and dedicated patriot, passed away at his home on July 26, 2024.
Born in Philadelphia, James was the son of the late J. Raymond and Elthor R. (Stees) Howland.
A proud veteran, he served his country honorably in the U.S. Marine Corps, achieving the rank of Corporal. During his service, he earned several commendations, including the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Rifle Marksman Badge, Vietnam Service Medal, and a Letter of Appreciation.
After his military service, James worked for ITT while also managing the Gibson County Airport. James then returned to PA where he brought his leadership and dedication to the business world, co-founding Vail Communications in the early 80’s, a company that continues to thrive to this day.
James was also a skilled commercial pilot, reflecting his lifelong passion for aviation, and a member of the American Chemical Society for 50 years.
He is survived by daughter, Jessica Howland, 2 sons, grandchildren: Logan and Tyler, and dear friends, Jeff and Karen Cowan. James will be deeply missed by his family along with numerous friends and colleagues from his various walks of life.
James’s legacy is one of service, dedication, and unwavering patriotism. He was a true American hero, proud to have served his country and equally proud of his family and friends.
James will be remembered for his courage, his commitment to his country, and the love he had for his family and friends. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
A memorial service will be held for Mr. James Howland at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at the Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery at Parkers Crossroads.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his memory to a veteran’s organization of choice.
